A beautiful scheming woman, dark secrets from the past; trust and deception; blackmail; moral corruption; a philandering dandy; insider trading; naive innocents; and all set amid the aristocratic gentile society of late-nineteenth century England. This is the setting for Oscar Wilde's "An Ideal Husband" - a play which explores human frailty, social hypocrisy and true friendship.

The dialogue may be light and humorous with all the English drawing room wit and elegance that one attributes to Wilde, but the message about human weakness, morality, tolerance and love is powerful, and has as much to say to us today as it did when it was written over a hundred years ago. The social manners are perhaps unfamiliar to us but the underlying human character traits are recognisable. A dazzling blend of farce and morality!

Is there such a thing as an 'ideal' husband - or wife? And would you want to be married to one?
