A madcap comedy. Easy-going drama critic Mortimer Brewster is caught in a sticky situation when he learns of his aunts' favourite pastime. The kind, sweet, lonely spinsters lure gentlemen to the house and serve them elderberry wine.... with a touch of arsenic! And then there's Mortimer's cousin who thinks he's Theodore Roosevelt and is building the Panama Canal ….. in the cellar.....!

Arsenic and Old Lace opened on Broadway in January 1941. The play ran for over three years. In 1944, Cary Grant starred as Mortimer in a Hollywood film version. In the years since, Kesselring's play has been performed in countless professional and amateur theatres around the world.

It is said that Kesselring never intended Arsenic and Old Lace to be a comedy. Rather, he saw it as a straight mystery-thriller, but was overruled by the producers.
